The dizi is one of the most popular instruments among the Chinese common people. The dizi is a staple of Chinese folk music and also is called the “King of the national music”.Many bamboo flute from China are made of bamboo. That’s why dizi are sometimes known by simple such as Chinese bamboo flute.

But sometimes you also find some made of stone. Jade and red wood even the West likes the wooden dizi. But you can find other bamboo flutes in China(because dizi is distinctive),like vertical end-blown xiao and the koudi. There are composed of the same thing but have more difference.

History of Dizi

In Chinese history, more evidences shows that it was invented in the Yellow Emperor (who is one of the important human in Chinese history). But others think it would be the invention of the Han dynasty.

The type of the bamboo will influence the sound of dizi and the distinct feature of the dizi is the addition of a membrane covered bowing hole which, when air passes over it, rattles creating a buzzing timbre, that gives it that signature sound. Thus, the dizi is known as the “chinese transverse flute” due to the addition of a secondary “mokong” sound hole.

Cover this hole is the “dimo” membrane, made from an almost tissue-like shaving of reed (made from the inner skin of bamboo cells),which is responsible for this resonating effect on the sound produced by the dizi, adding and amplifying brighter notes, and creating harmonics. As a result, Dizi has a relatively large range, covering about two-and-a-quarter octaves. There's a picture about the construction of dizi.
